Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which undergraduate majors suitable for me?

Our undergraduate programs that prepare you to become a teacher are divided into three major categories. You need to determine the age level of children you are most interested in teaching to find suitable program.

I already have a Bachelor's degree. What are my options?

Iowa State offers two options for students with a bachelor's degree who wish to obtain teacher licensure.

Option 1: Complete the undergraduate teacher education requirements in a given undergraduate teacher licensure option. Usually much of your undergraduate/pre bachelor's degree course work will count in fulfilling requirements, but the specific courses you will need can only be determined by careful analysis of what you have taken. Typically, it takes a minimum of 4 to 6 semesters to complete the necessary courses.

Option 2: Complete two graduate programs that lead to teacher licensure. These are offered only in specialized areas. (??? - check with Al)

  • Master of Arts in Teaching in Science Education
  • Graduate licensure - Mathematics Education with Master of Education option

How long does it take to complete a major in Elementary or Early Childhood Education?

Either program may be completed in the traditional four years, or eight semesters. However, students typically will take courses one or two summers, complete an extra semester, or even attend a full fifth year. There are many reasons for this. Some students work part-time or become highly involved in campus activities while attending college and take fewer hours to maintain a quality grade point average. Others seek minors or additional endorsements to increase their knowledge base and marketability.

What are the class sizes?

General education courses vary across campus, ranging from 25 to hundreds. The major methods courses offered in Elementary and Early Childhood Education programs limit class size to less than thirty to assure high quality experiences.

Where are classes located?

General education courses may be anywhere on campus – make sure you bring a good pair of walking shoes! Most professional education courses are located either in Lagomarcino Hall or the buildings in the immediate area.

Is the summer orientation program and the orientation course offered in the fall the same thing?

No. Summer orientation is designed to help new students get registered for classes and to become more familiar with campus. The orientation courses are designed to assist new students with the transition into college life, to gain an understanding of program requirements, and to relate policies and procedures, such as how to register for classes, how to add and drop classes, and other important information.

What does the "Unified" in ECEU refer to?

Iowa State University’s Early Childhood major has integrated special education into the programming, meaning that students graduating from this program will be eligible for licensure in both Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Education Special Education.

Why is it difficult to take both Elementary and Early Childhood Education at Iowa State University?

Both programs are highly specialized for their emphasis. The addition of special education into the ECE program resulted in specialized methods specifically designed for K-3rd grade levels with the integration of special needs information. The degree of specialization makes combining the two programs difficult.

I know I want to be a teacher, but I am not sure if I want to teach elementary or secondary. Is there a class I can take to help me decide?

CI 280A is a great class for helping sort out this question. Known as Teacher’s Aid, it requires the student to attend class one hour per week on campus to learn certain fundamental skills. The student is then required to work with a public school teacher for 24 hours as a teacher’s aid. This experience may be completed at any grade level.
