  • Reason you chose to do your graduate work in the C & I Department at ISU?
I originally selected Iowa State for graduate study to work on a 7-12 Reading endorsement for my teaching license.  Doing so at Iowa State offered the ability to earn the endorsement while staying close to central Iowa and family.  As I grew more connected with faculty and more engaged with the research process through my experiences in the department, I pursued the thesis option for my Master’s degree.  Taking great satisfaction in pursuing graduate school in a supportive environment helped me continue toward doctoral studies in my area.
  • What is your area of study and research?
My interest in Literacy Education has its origin in my work as a secondary level Language Arts teacher.  Graduate studies have greatly expanded my understanding of the many theories intersecting Literacy and the teaching of reading.  Favoring qualitative inquiry, my interests are in new literacies, critical pedagogy and critical literacy, the teaching of writing, and the use of research-based strategies that support reading comprehension at the secondary level.
  • What C & I Department member is helping you with your study/research?
Dr. Lori Norton-Meier has been my major professor through my Master’s degree and current doctoral program.  I have been very fortunate to experience a highly collegial engagement with the entire literacy team.
  • What classes have you helped teach?
I worked with Dr. Geoff Abelson as a teaching assistant for Special Education 250 for a number of semesters before taking on the role of lead instructor for Curriculum and Instruction 395 (secondary reading methods) in Fall 2008.  With C&I 395 I revised the syllabus and enjoyed an insightful experience that also included some excellent collaboration with the English department.  In Spring 2009 I was the lead instructor for a section of Curriculum and Instruction 378, working with intermediate methods, and in the Summer 2009 I will be teaching Curriculum and Instruction 553.
  • As a result of your work at ISU, what do you plan to do in your future career?  Next steps?
The next steps in my work at ISU are finishing my remaining coursework this fall and beginning the journey on my dissertation work.  Future steps will involve seeking a faculty position at a university in Literacy and Literacy Education.
  • What else would you like to add that would be helpful when a prospective student looks at our Web page?
Links to the Graduate College (perhaps the Forms page), Registrar (where to send undergraduate transcripts), Health Insurance (to get prices on health care), information on Financial Aid, Scholarships, Graduate and Professional Student Senate.  Essentially, information/areas of University life/paperwork one would need to know/complete in order to move to Ames and to arrive on campus knowing where to go to deliver appropriate materials.
