Introduction
The Master of Science degree is the intial step in pursuing a degree as a scholar in an educational field. The M.S. provides students with the initial level of research/scholarship skills and knowledge and the basic knowledge of a field of education from which competent scholarship can spring.
Many students use this degree to pursue career opportunities in school districts, Area Education Agencies, and business or industry. However, most students either seek employmment as a faculty member in a college or pursue additional education (typically a Ph.D.) and intent to become faculty members in colleges or universities. Students pursuing an M.S. degree are being prepared to be contributors to the development of knowledge about education.
While coursework in the Master of Science and Master of Education (M.Ed.) degrees overlap, there is a greater emphasis on becoming a scholar in the M.S. programs and a greater practitioner emphasis in the M.Ed. programs.
