Mission and Goals
At the graduate level, the mission of the department is to prepare graduate students who become leaders in their respective fields and substantively impact educational research, theory, and practice.
We prepare students who will return to classrooms in Iowa and elsewhere with advanced knowledge and skills to become more effective teachers and leaders in their schools, and students who will pursue advanced study of the field of education and teaching and will become future faculty and teacher educators.
Nature of the Programs
The education provided at the graduate level is collaborative and designed to promote the development of the student as a teacher or scholar. Graduate students are encouraged to become involved in the ongoing scholarship of the department and are given responsibility and opportunities to develop as scholars from the earliest part of their graduate program. Within the requirements of the various degrees and with the facilitation of a major professor (advisor) and program of study committee, the student plans an individualized program of study leading to the degree sought.
Approximately 250 graduate students are pursuing advanced degrees in the department.
