The HPC studies emphasis offers an historical and conceptual grounding in the landscape of education in the United States. Iowa State offers particular expertise in the historical and contemporary relationship between education and struggles for social justice. Questions that focus this specialization include: What should be the purpose of education, and who should decide? How have schools participated in both creating and alleviating social inequities? What should be the role of schools and educators in the social order? How have individuals and communities used educational projects (formal and informal, schooling and non-schooling) as part of broader struggles for social justice? The program will be of interest to teachers, educational activists, and others who would like to deepen their understanding of the historical and contemporary landscape of education in the United States. The masters program in HPC will also be of interest to students wishing to pursue doctoral work in the field of education, especially in social and cultural foundations. |
