The M.Ed., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in education offered by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction are intended for students interested in completing a general education degree.


With a special program-of study committee, each generalist student plans a sequence of courses that satisfies the department degree requirements along with an individualized emphasis, including:

Foreign Language Education (Master's level only)

The foreign language emphasis, offered in collaboration with the National K-12 Foreign Language Resource Center, provides students the opportunity to study effective teaching strategies, curriculum design, performance based assessment, and technology with national leaders in foreign language education. To compliment their major discipline work, students may complete minors in French, German, Latin, Russian, or Spanish.

Mathematics Education

The mathematics education graduate programs at Iowa State University are flexible. They accommodate the student who wishes to improve his/her K-12 teaching proficiency, as well as the student who wishes to pursue an academic career in mathematics education. As such, our programs meet the unique needs of individual Masters/Ph.D. degree candidates. The students in our programs will complete a balance of coursework in mathematics education, education, and mathematics.

Multicultural Education

The multicultural emphasis prepares students for careers in K-12 schools, social service and human relations agencies, and higher education. Students complete an individualized program of study that may include antiracist curriculum development, curriculum theory, multicultural gender fair education, and curriculum gender studies.

Literacy Education

The literacy education emphasis prepares students for literacy leadership in schools. Throughout the series of courses, students explore literacy theories, teaching strategies, materials, assessment issues, integration of language arts, literature-based instruction, use and evaluation of language arts software, diagnosis and correction of reading problems, and diagnostic procedures to plan and implement reading instruction. Coursework can be tailored to lead to a reading endorsement.

Science Education

The science education emphasis is designed for students who want to improve their K-12 teaching practices, as well as for students who wish to pursue academic careers as teacher educators and researchers. Ongoing research areas include nature of science, teacher education, writing to learn science, and learning through computer simulation.
