Outcomes Assessment Relative To Scholarly-Oriented Graduate Programs
Master of Science and Ph.D. programs
Our MS and Ph.D. are related. They are designed to produce individuals who will contribute to ongoing knowledge development and scholarship in education. The MS degree is envisioned as encompassing preliminary work toward the Ph.D. The outcomes assessment system for these programs share features.
- Understanding of Scholarship and Theory
Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to understand historical and current educational scholarly literature including empirical and theoretical articles by being able to read, understand, utilize, and apply educational writings to educational issues and by being able to participate in professional discussions of educational topics related to the student's areas of interest.
- Disciplined Inquiry, Scholarship, Research
Demonstrate the ability to map out a line of inquiry and conduct scholarly work in an area of interest. Demonstrate the ability to use research, evaluation, or developmental methods that are appropriate for the issue being investigated and the theoretical and philosophical foundations that bound the inquiry, and demonstrate the ability to flexibly apply various methodological approaches to particular problems of inquiry.
Achievement of Learning Outcomes
Major Professor and Program of Study
In collaboration with the major professor and Program of Study committee, the student will develop an individualized plan of study designed to achieve these desired outcomes.
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
The primary means of assessing these learning outcomes is through the completion of a thesis or dissertation. Whatever the format of this thesis or dissertation, the student will demonstrate:
Learning Outcome 1,by reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting existing literature relevant to the problem or issue of interest and indicating how this literature applies to the issue under inquiry.
Learning Outcome 2, by planning and carrying out an investigation or inquiry relevant to the issues of interest using appropriate and relevant methodology, analyzing and reporting the results of that inquiry, and interpreting the results of the inquiry in the context of the issue under investigation and integrating her or his results with the body of relevant theory and scholarship in the area.
Follow-up and Feedback
In conjunction with the follow up plans, the Graduate Program Committee will develop a plan for systematic follow ’Äì up of students receiving graduate degrees. Surveys and qualitative research/data collection with graduates and employers will be conducted. A biannual report will be prepared for the faculty and graduate program committee.
