Measurement of Outcomes
Undergraduate Programs
The desired outcomes based on these standard are assessed through student performances on designated assignments in courses. These assignments are called designated performance indicators (DPI). Across the undergraduate program options, each outcome is assessed at least twice with a DPI. Each DPI involves a paper and pencil or actual classroom teaching performance that assess one or more desired program outcomes. Over the course of the students’Äô education, DPIs move from more paper and pencil based performance outcome assessments to more real-life performances. They culminate in student teaching in which outcome performances related to effective teaching for each of the standards is assessed.
In addition, follow-up assessments with graduates and employers provide long term assessments of outcomes.
The Department has responsibility for six program options:
- Elementary Education (Grade K ’Äì Grade 6 teacher licensure)
- The Grade K to Grade 3 components of Early Childhood Education licensure
- The pedagogical components of secondary mathematics education licensure (Grade 7-Grade12) Undergraduate Licensure program
- The pedagogical components of secondary mathematics education licensure (Grade 7-Grade12) Graduate Licensure MAT program
- The pedagogical components of secondary science education licensure (Grade 7-Grade 12).Undergraduate Licensure program
- The pedagogical components of secondary mathematics education licensure (Grade 7-Grade12) Graduate Licensure program
Most courses impact most of the standards. To create a manageable outcomes assessment system, courses were assigned responsibility for standards and developed DPI assignments to assess outcomes for these standards. Courses continue to teach content related to the majority of standards as appropriate for the course. To ensure that all content in courses is attended to by students, minimum grades of C are required in all pedagogical courses required for teacher licensure.
Students DPI assignments are graded Acceptable, Marginally Acceptable, or Unacceptable. A student cannot have any unacceptable grades on a DPI and be recommended for licensure. Students may retake courses in which they receive unacceptable DPIs. The students must demonstrate a marginally acceptable level of performance at minimum. Across all the DPIs, the students cannot have more than two grades of marginally acceptable. Students must retake learning experiences if they receive a third marginally acceptable grade.
Because student teaching provides the most life-like setting in which to assess outcome performance, each of the standards is assessed in student teaching.
The specific courses in which DPIs are assessed are provided in each of the tables below for each of the six program options indicated above.
